Character Information Name: Rodney McKay Fandom: Stargate Atlantis PB: David Hewlett age: 40 journal: prettydamnsmart powers: Rodney’s pretty sure his intelligence is a super power. ;-) He also has the ATA gene allegiance: Good.
Relationships: Rodney dated fellow scientist Katie Brown for a while. He also had a crush on Samantha Carter, and dated a girl in college (although, according to Sheppard Rodney “stalked” said girl but what does Sheppard know?) He tends to develop crushes on anyone he thinks of as smart - men or women. He currently really likes a certain medical doctor but doesn’t know how to act on his feelings.
Friendships: Carson Beckett is Rodney’s best friend. Yes, they bicker like an old married couple but Rodney really does care for the other man. Rodney also considers John and Teyla as his friends, too. He still isn’t sure about Ronon but thinks he’s a nice guy.
Sexuality: In canon he has been written as straight, but for the sake of this game I’m playing him as bisexual.
Strengths: Rodney is a genius. He’s good at solving problems, and fixing things on Atlantis. No problem is too big for him to tackle.
Weaknesses: With his genius comes a rather big ego. He tends to think he’s better than most people. Rodney also hides his emotions, especially toward other people.
Habits/Quirks: Rodney is a big germophobe. He constantly thinks he’s sick. He gets easily stressed out by things, and can be bit of a drama queen.
Personality: Rodney is an egomaniac, who respects very few people. He tends to think he’s better than others, which is used to mask the emotionally turmoil inside. He’s awful when it comes to being honest with his emotions, and often flubs things up. He can be loyal to the few friends he has. A big comic book fan, Rodney is enthralled with Batman, and wished to be him while growing up. He’s bright, and isn’t afraid to tell others they’re wrong. He does his best thinking in the bathtub.
What was your character doing before they arrived on the island? Meredith Rodney McKay was born in Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada. He was later joined by younger sister Jeannie. From the beginning, Rodney showed great intelligence. He was a quick learner, and was always proud of what he had accomplished. But his brilliance wasn’t enough to make his home life easy. Rodney’s parents blame their son for everything, and never gave him the proper emotional support he needed.
As a young boy, Rodney played piano and truly thought he was going the next Mozart. However, his teacher told him his hands weren’t built right to be a player so Rodney turned to science. He was also a member of the Fort McMurray Eager Beavers as a child.
After college, Rodney went to work at Area 51 and became an expert on the Stargate network. He was called to the SGC to help Samantha Carter find Teal’c. However, all of Rodney’s theories were proven wrong and he was reassigned to Russia, where he helped oversee the transfer and development of the naqahdah generator technology. Eventually, he’s given another chance at the SGC and succeeds.
Soon after, Rodney was sent to the Ancient Outpost, where he met Carson Beckett. Rodney doesn’t like him at first (especially since Carson has the ATA gene and he doesn’t), but the two slowly build a friendship. When Atlantis’ address was discovered, Rodney was named head of the science and research department and went with the expedition to the lost city. There he is made part of John Sheppard’s team.
Atlantis posed a lot of different problems for Rodney. It seemed he was saving the city, and his peers, on a weekly basis. However, his job became easier when Carson gave him the ATA gene therapy, which allowed Rodney to operate Ancient devices. The first year on Atlantis proved to be tough, especially when it became obvious they were on their own with no contact with Earth. Eventually it worked out, and the city was saved from the Wraith.
With the Gate from Earth working, more scientists allowed to come through. Rodney met Katie Brown, a botanist. He liked her but every time he made a date with her he would break it. Eventually Laura Cadman, who was inside of Rodney’s body at the time, forced him to keep a date. The two dated on and off but nothing serious ever came of it.
One day, Rodney was called back to Earth to deal with his little sister. It seemed she had made a bridge that could gap different realities and the Stargate program was interested in it. However, Jeannie wanted no part of the science community or government. Rodney eventually talked her into coming to Atlantis with him, where they built the bridge. Things went horribly wrong and a Rodney from a different reality came through. Rodney hated his alternative self, especially when it seemed his friends liked the other Rodney better. He eventually solved the problem and sent the other Rodney back to his own reality.
Rodney, along with Samantha Carter, developed the Midway Gate System. While testing it, an Ancient ship was found. The Ancients demanded Atlantis be given back to them so the crew had to go back to Earth. Rodney was shipped back to Area 51 and hated it. When it was found out the Replicators had taken over the city, Rodney, Elizabeth, Carson and John decided to go back to Atlantis to take it back. Just as they were going through the wormhole, Rodney saw a flash and was then laying on the ground.
He comes into the game in the season three episode “The Return”. |
